ULBP5 acts as a ligand for the NKG2D receptor on the surface of NK cells. ULBP ligands are produced by virally infected cells and tumours. Stimulation of NKG2D contributes to anti-tumour and anti-viral immune responses of NK cells. ULBP5 is expressed in two variants, as a membrane and soluble isoform.
