Summary

Interleukin 6 (IL-6) also named B-cell stimulatory factor (BSF-2), hepatocyte-stimulating factor (HSF), hybridoma growth factor (HGF) or interferon (IFN)-β2 is a 26 kDa glycoprotein composed of 184 amino acids. IL-6 is cytokine with multiple pleiotropic effect on inflammation, immune response, hematopoiesis and oncogenesis. IL-6 is expressed in many types of cells, such as adipocytes, fibroblasts, osteoblasts, endothelial cells, neurons, lymphocytes, monocytes, neutrophils etc. and its expression is dependent on cell activation. Circulating IL-6 levels in healthy people are very low, about 1 pg/ml, but during inflammation, IL-6 levels increase rapidly. Anti-inflammatory properties of IL-6 are mainly responsible for the antibacterial and beneficial regenerative processes. Pro-inflammatory properties of IL-6 negatively affect chronic inflammation and autoimmunity. Increased levels of IL-6 have been found in patients with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, insulin resistant, diabetes mellitus type 2, atopic asthma, rheumatoid arthritis but also in patients with advance stage cancer, blood circulating micrometastasis etc.
